"It was just before midnight, on the eve of Easter.  The EMTs arrived and I was lying on the boat dock with massive lacerations to both lower legs.  My lower body was hit by the boat propeller resulting in multiple partial amputations of different parts of my legs and feet.  On initial contact, I had lost so much blood, there was no radial pulse nor any blood pressure.  The propeller broke both of my femurs, both kneecaps, both tibias, both fibulas, my left calcaneus, and severed the right half of my foot.  48 days in the hospital, 17 surgeries, and one (1) full year later, I met Phil Yudson – we started at just above zero, the basics – squatting down and getting back up unassisted.  Almost three (3) years later after working with Phil, I’m proud to say I climbed Mt. Washington on the coldest day of the year, I hiked 26 miles of the Inca trail to Machu Picchu in Peru, wake boarded, snowboarded, paddle-boarded, etc… he helped get me back to me.  But it wasn’t just the physical rebound that Phil aided in, it was the mental, and the nutritional.  With lots of medication dependencies and unhealthy distractions to keep my sanity, Phil helped me think through my perspectives, and provided caring, yet candid advice.

I have more surgeries to go and more mountains to climb. I don’t expect as much from myself as I used to, but I still don’t want anything to get in my way; so I continue to see Phil twice a week and thank God for him every day."

"I began working out with Phil twice a week to supplement my marathon training.  My repeated attempts at qualifying for Boston were a few minutes too slow and, to be honest, I was desperate to try anything to shave the 5 minutes I needed.

I was a bit skeptical about strength training since I felt, at the time, I was as fit as I could possibly be. Quite the contrary; I came to realize that I may have been in decent shape, but I was weak in areas that had a great effect on my running: core stability, balance, and anaerobic condition.  Phil not only gave me the “hows” for improving these areas, but also offered the “whys”.  Understanding the purpose behind my efforts served as motivation!

Phil is no-nonsense, proactive, and results-driven.  He will expect you to break out of your comfort zone, test your body’s limits, and be accountable to working hard.  I would recommend Phil as a trainer to anyone looking for a challenge.

As a result of working with Phil, I am at the top of my running game.  I am faster, able to maintain my form at the end of 20 mile long runs, and no longer plagued by small injuries.  My overall strength has also improved significantly.  I feel more confident than ever about qualifying for Boston this fall!"

"Phil was my trainer for about 18 weeks as I worked to get back to a better fitness point to compete in my triathlon regimen.

I've always been a fitness-guy, in fact I have an expired ACE personal training certification, but the past couple years my workouts hit a rut, and my age and poor diet did the rest. While I was still in the gym five days a week, I couldn't lose the weight I needed to become a better triathlete.

To get to the point, Phil really used not only his education, but also his physiology knowledge to really customize a lot of explosive, ballistic workouts for me that had me gasping and were very much body-weight oriented - workouts that I could take to a hotel and do in a small gym or in my room as I travel a lot.

Most importantly he worked around two minor but painful injuries - one in my shoulder, another in my left foot.

I no longer train with Phil as I became very busy with work, but have followed his plans since then. I am now almost 25 lbs lighter and beat my personal best in my most recent triathlon by 17 minutes!"

"As an IT consultant, I kept odd hours working 24/7, not keeping to a disciplined workout, nor did I eat wisely. The result was that I was overweight, lacking energy and muscle definition. I started a small consulting firm working with clients in the Washington, DC area, and my stress levels rose.

I signed up with Phil hoping to lose weight and establish a workout routine.

Phil helped me accomplish my goals. Initially, I was barely able to do a push up and after Phil’s program, he had me doing heavy dead lifts and jumping pull ups. I could always count on him to be very organized and have an aggressive program that challenged me. Because of his professionalism and support I regained a sense of discipline and good health. Even though weight loss was my primary focus, I achieved other important benefits, such as a healthy blood pressure level in spite of my stressful job and lifestyle. Phil was such a great coach inside the gym and recommended activities such as races outside of the gym.

The longer we worked together, the more I increased my capabilities. I felt that Phil was as dedicated to helping me achieve my goals as I was. He kept my interest by varying the workouts. He helped me chart my caloric intake and activities online to track progress towards my weight and fitness goals. Phil kept careful notes about my prior weights and times to keep pushing me forward. On days when I would rather go home and do nothing after a long day, going to my appointment with Phil was always worth it and I would leave the gym re-energized. Phil was always enthusiastic and supportive while keeping me accountable and focused.

At our company holiday party, an arm wrestling contest broke out. I attribute my victory to Phil and really, what’s more valuable than bragging rights?"
